Her story, in four stages ↓
01 The lab bench 2003 · 2010

Where care became a calling.

Afoma started in science: a B.Sc. in Biochemistry from the University of Nigeria, then four years as an assistant research biochemist at Noma Hospital, working with patient lab tests, clinical records, and the equipment that kept the research running.

The same years took her into rural communities with a volunteer health organisation, caring for people affected by Noma disease. The lesson never left her: behind every sample and every record is a person.

02 The wards 2020 · 2024

Frontline first. Then the data behind it.

As a med service assistant at a specialist hospital in Abuja, Afoma worked the frontline: resolving patient issues, guiding people through stressful moments, and learning how much calm communication changes an outcome.

Then she crossed to the other side of the desk: a two-year data science internship back at Noma Hospital, doing hands-on hospital data work under senior data scientists. Care on the floor, evidence behind it.

03 The retraining 2022 · 2026

A digital turn, certified by the best.

Healthcare was going digital, so Afoma went with it. She retrained deliberately, course by course, for the work healthcare teams actually need now: telehealth, health informatics, data, and the psychology of the people in the system.
